Who Invented Atari?

Those in the gaming world might have heard of Atari games, such as Pong, Frogger, and Space Invaders. While they remain classic, Atari has had a wild ride in history from who invented Atari to what it has become. In 1972, Nolan Bushnell and his associate Ted Dabney are the ones who invented Atari, a gaming console company. They originally wanted to call the firm Syzygy Engineering, but found out that the name was already in use when they tried to register, so Bushnell changed it to Atari. He actually got the name when he played his game Go, and decided on the gaming term Atari which means that one party's stones are in danger of being taken by their opponents. The word in Japanese means "to hit the target" or when someone predicts an event with accuracy.

The game Pong by Atari was marked a turning point in Atari's history as 150,000 copies were sold. Then, in 1975, the company was sold to Warner Communications. Success followed through as Atari 2600 and Atari home video system was incredibly popular, gaining majority of Warne's profits in sales. However, it was in 1983 when the sales took a dive in the US, with Atari holding losses over 0 million. Warner then passed Atari to Jack Tramiel, former head of Commodore, creating Atari Corporation. Atari St managed to sell up to million in 1986. However, soon, rival Nintendo came into the picture and stole the limelight. Atari came up with Lynx, a handheld console with color, but it sold poorly due to shortage during the Christmas season and it was costlier than the readily-available Nintendo Game Boy. Then, Tramiel tried to revive Atari through their personal computers line, but the rise of Microsoft Windows took the trophies. There were many law disputes with Nintendo during that time.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s was Atari's bleakest periods - they were sold and resold over and over again, with companies like Sega, JTS, Hasbro, and Infogrames. Under Infogrames in 2008, Atari Inc took over Cryptic Studios. While this is so, Atari is no longer what it originally was. Yet, it had made the gaming world what it is today.
